About Haunt the House

Haunt the House is a 2010 game by SFB Games in which, for once, you are the ghost. A party of guests has moved into your quiet old house, and you would like them gone. You drift through the rooms as a little ghost and possess the objects around you – a candelabra, a portrait, a piano, a suit of armour – and make them move, flicker and lunge.

Every object has a few actions, from a gentle wobble to a full-blown fright. The guests react: a slight scare makes them uneasy, a bigger one sends them running. Once they are frightened enough, they flee for the doors and windows. Clear out every room and the house is yours again. The art is cute and the tone is playful, so it is spooky without being scary.

Stuck? Hints, gentlest first

Hint 1 – start small

Small scares work on calm guests. Rattle a few objects first; guests who are already nervous are much easier to frighten into running.

Hint 2 – build up the fear

Every possessed object has stronger effects the more frightened the people around it are. Escalate slowly instead of using your biggest scare at once.

Hint 3 – chase them out

Frightened guests run towards exits. Follow them from room to room and keep the pressure on until they leave the building.

back in 2010

Haunt the House was made by SFB Games in 2010. Turning the haunted house formula upside down – you are the ghost, and you want the people gone – made it one of the most charming Flash games of its year, later remade as Haunt the House: Terrortown.
